Five signs worth taking seriously
Most infections do not announce themselves with a ransom note. They settle in quietly and cost you in small ways. Here are the five signs we see most often.
1. Pages suddenly slow down
Malware often injects scripts that mine crypto or send traffic elsewhere, and the weight shows up as lag. If your site got slower overnight with no change on your side, check for unexpected scripts before blaming hosting.
2. Admin users you never created
A new administrator account named something innocent is a classic backdoor. Review Users in your dashboard and remove anything you did not create.
3. Ads or pop-ups you did not add
Injected links and pop-ups usually target mobile visitors, so they can be invisible on your own desktop. Visit your site from a phone in an incognito window.
4. Google warnings or blacklist notices
If visitors see a warning before your homepage loads, Google has detected something and Search Console will tell you what. That report is your roadmap.
5. Weird traffic or uptime drops
Sudden referral spikes or long maintenance-style downtime can mean your site is serving someone else’s content. Uptime monitors make this visible fast.
What to do right now
Change all passwords, update everything, and check core files for edits. If any sign above fits, treat it as active until a clean scan says otherwise – our malware removal service includes cleanup, hardening and delisting help. And if you do not have a recent verified restore point, read how to check your backup actually works before touching anything.
Prevent the next one
The sites that get infected are usually the ones nobody looks at. A care plan keeps updates tested and applied weekly, monitors uptime, and runs security scans every day – starting at $30/mo. That is cheaper than one cleanup, and it is the difference between reacting and being ready.
